8 SCENES
Premise : The main idea is to make a film that will delve into the widely unspoken subconscious mind. The mind will transcend through physical and mental states, switching between realism and surrealism.

The objective of the film is to uncover the theme-conflict, confusion and chaos within self and surrounding through evasive issues like identity-crisis, our reason for existence, our deepest inner fears that most people are constantly grappling with.

It is an abstract film intended for the audience to 'read' and perceive based on their own existing schemata. It is not about what is in the film but what the film does for the viewer. The ties in with the idea of when in the subconscious state, we usually don't think about what we are doing, therefore to find a logical meaning is sometimes useless. There will be no conclusive statement revealed in the end, but the audience will take what they want form the material that is presented and think what they want from it.

The character is Idex. The time is the present, 2001.
Who is Idex ?
An emotional , 'coffee-club' generation girl who is passionate about her art. She has a favourite cafe that she frequents to relax, unwind and think.

Through a series of dysfunctional images, we glimpse into Idex's highly emotional and unstable subconscious. The story will start out with Idex at the cafe ,the physical realm. She is walking in a dark alley and meets with sequence of multiple pathways leading to different doors. She finds herself tapped in different situations and constantly looking for a way out. She has to interact with different objects in her quest to escape. Her experience is almost game-like in a screen-based 3-D game.

 

SCENE 1 :AT THE CAFE

A  cosy setting of a cafe - people in the cafe are chatting away happily.

Waiter and waitress are walking briskly, serving the customers. Idex is

relaxing at the cafe.

 

REVERSE POV, PAN FROM LEFT TO RIGHT TO CENTRE of the cafe

where Idex is sitting.

 

WIDE SHOT of Idex sitting in the Coffee Club, sipping a cup of hot chocolate.

 

POV, shot of finished plate of desert next to her.

 

TRUCK-IN, Idex absent-minded stirs her cup with a small fork.

 

CLOSE SHOT, top view of coffee in a cup and dissolve to....

 

 

SCENE 2 :IN THE ALLEY

MID-SHOT She walks into an alley

 

CLOSE SHOT, FOLLOW SHOT, back view of Idex's shoes with walking

motion.

 

Idex thinks she hears steps behind her.

 

MID SHOT, she looks around and a shadow passes over her face.

 

Paranoid and confusion set in.

 

POV, Idex looks down at her feet as she walks faster. She is looking out for

any lurking shadows behind her.

 

HUFF! HUFF! Heavy breathing can be heard from Idex.

 

POV, erratic camera shots, Idex desperately looks around 360 degrees.

 

WS, back view of Idex running.

 

 

 

SCENE 3 :UP A STAIRCASE

Idex comes to a staircase.

CLOSE SHOT, of Idex's first step going to the stairs. Shot through the poles.

 

CLOSE SHOT of Idex's shoes through the poles going up the staircase.

 

MID-SHOT Idex is running past doors trying to get away.

 

 

SCENE 4 :DOORS

LONG SHOT, montage of door slamming repeatedly.

 

CLOSE SHOT, Idex tightens her upper collar.

 

BANG! BANG!

BANG! BANG!

BANG! BANG!

The door bangs furiously.

 

She catches sight of a particular door. She bends to examine the shiny door knob

and looks through the gaping keyhole.

 

TWO SHOT, Idex bends towards a shiny door-knob.

 

CLOSE SHOT, a reflection of Idex's image is on the door-knob.

 

POV, through the key hole and

WIDE SHOT, there are three chairs sitting side-by-side in a row.

 

Like magic, she is transcended into the room.

 

SCENE 5 : IN A ROOM

Conflicting emotions are revealed here.

Frustrations, boredom, confusion juxtaposed with flashes of happy thoughts.

 

CLOSE SHOT, POV, on the chairs, there is a butter-knife, a spoon, and a fork.

 

MID-SHOT, Idex walks over and examines the objects.

 

CLOSE-SHOT,she picks up the fork delicately and sits on the chair, still confused.

 

MID-SHOT, she starts absentmindedly combing her hair with the fork.

 

CLOSE-SHOT, her face. Stares at the light of the ceiling.

Quick PAN from ceiling to light.

 

She gets restless and looks for a way to get out of the room.

Frustrations kicks in.

WIDE SHOT, shaking her head and looking around.

Superimposition of her talking happily on her mobile phone.

 

MID SHOT, looks under the chair and

CLOSE SHOT, finds a charcoal stick.

Picks it up and stands up, figuring out what to do.

 

She goes over to the wall, behind the chairs and

primitive instincts take over.

Like a child armed with a crayon, she starts to draw.

Just scribbling at first, soon slowly but surely, she draws out a door to escape.

 

MID SHOT, goes over to wall and slowly starts to draw four big Xs. (too much XXXX beer)

and a door.

 

CLOSE SHOT, Drawing parts of the door, XXXX + door knob + outlines.

 

CLOSE SHOT, trying frantically to open door. Twisting the door knob.

 

MID SHOT, she suddenly melts through the door into another room.

 

 

SCENE 6 : IN A TOILET

POV, WIDE SHOT of a toilet.

A toilet bowl catches her sight.

WIDE SHOT of a toilet with a toilet bowl not covered.

 

This time, Idex is completely devastated by the chain of events.

CLOSE SHOT of Idex closing the toilet seat and CLOSE SHOT of

Idex sitting on top of it.

 

She is clearly frustrated.

Mulitple montage shots.

ANGLE ON (ant's view)

WIDE SHOT of Idex clasps her two hands tightly and held her two hands up(still clasping)

WIDE SHOT of Idex wringing her hair.

 

WIDE SHOT, we find water flowing out of the sink with Idex's back in the background.

But Idex is oblivious to her surrounding. How can she get out ?

 

Still on the toilet seat, she calms down a bit and starts to fiddle with the lizard ring on her

finger. CLOSE SHOT lizard ring.

 

She stares at the ring and raises her hand towards the mirror.

She suddenly notices some writing on the mirror.

She takes her hand away.

PAN up and down on text - <Focus on what you want>.

 

Looks at words and her confusion slowly clears.

Taking the words as a cue, she grabs her jacket on the wall.

MID SHOT The look on her face tells us she is ready ( to go back to reality ?)

 

With a last glance at the mirror, dissolve to ....

 

SCENE 7 : BACK TO CAFE

TWO SHOT, Idex approaches a girl asleep on a table.

MID SHOT of Idex sitting on the table.

CLOSE SHOT, Idex melts into herself and back to reality.

FAST FORWARD and play the entire film from back to beginning.

FADE OUT, at the cafe in SCENE 1.

 

SCENE 8 : AT A BUS-STOP

CROSS-DISSOLVE, text on mirror & busy street.

Idex is transcended into a crowded, busy street, full of people walking.

 

WIDE SHOT, Idex finds herself sitting on a bus-stop.

 

WIDE SHOT, people are walking pass her.

They do not seem to notice her, seems oblivious about their surrounding.

 

WIDE SHOT, she stands up and walks back to cafe.

She seems sure of what she's doing now.
