Market trends
Run=Dim is the latest Japan-Korea 3-D CG animated TV series and is using
motion capture.
'Anime' is Japanese animation and 'manga' is Japanese graphic novels. Manga, quite simply, is the Japanese word for comics. In this television age, teenagers belong to the 'visual generation'. Japanese comic culture is associated with commerical spin-offs toys animation, picture books adn video games. Many parts of the world are familiar with the vitality, visual culture of Japan's comics.
Japan is not only a global economic power but also a growing cultural power. Japan has become a major force in shaping our popular culture, youth culture, material culture and consumer culture.
For instance, for the American viewers, Sailer Moon offers a new kind of role modelfor girls, one that combines fashion and human foibles with strength and self-reliance. ("Sailor Moon: Japanese Superheroes for Global Girls," by Anne Allison)
Doraemon is the bright blue cat with the magic pocket full of high-tech gadgets and the star of the best selling comics/animation series in Japanese history. ("Doraemon Goes Abroad,"by Saya Shiraishi)
Idol characteristics such as the "cute style" and the "life-sized" persona
(above average but not outstanding)are introduced, along with the views and words of several idols and fans. Aoyagi also links idols to economic growth and shows how they contribute to the formation of a common "Asian identity" among young people from different Asian nations. ("Pop Idols and the Asian Identity",by Hiroshi Aoyagi)
In the 1980s and 1990s, we have witnessed a "Japanese culture boom" in the East Asian region including Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and South Korea) and the Southeast Asian region ( such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia ). This can be seen from the increasing popularity of Japanese video games, comics, animation, cuisine, fashion, merchandise, TV dramas, pop music, karaoke, neo-print and movies in the 1990s. Japanese popular culture is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.
